Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms is a digitally sculpted form derived from original coat of arms oil painting at RMIT Universtiy. This 3D sculpted geometry was formed over the original digital skins of Melbourne & Vietnam Mace where the resulting mesh was 3d Printed in Ti-6AL-4V Titanium via SLM process. It adorns the motto “Perita manus, mens exculta” – a skilled hand, a cultivated mind – which continues to be used by the University today. The resulting form was hand polished  at RMIT and Titanium Nitride coated at Sutton ToolsSurface Technology Coating Division. The RMIT University, Melbourne & Vietnam Campus Ceremonial MACE & Coat of Arms were designed in collaboration between Dr Scott Mayson and Dr Roland Snooks at School of Architecture & Design‘s D_LAB & Dr Mark Edgoose, RMIT Gold & Silver-Smithing. The mace and coat of arms was 3d printed in titanium at Advanced Manufacturing Precinct at RMIT University by Professor Milan Brandt and Aaron Pateras.
